'The Deacon' was Steve Hunter's second solo album. It was released in 1989.

Steve was living in Hollywood, CA and was finding it hard to get work. His blues based style was not the flavor of the month anymore. Glam Rock was in and the phone was not ringing. He had seen an article in the LA Weekly, Miles Copeland was looking for guitar players from the 70's for a new label called Guitar Speak. He sent over a cassette to Miles who liked what he heard and and Steve was invited to a meeting.

Miles had a formidable reputation but Steve and he hit it off well and Steve always found him to be very encouraging albeit very direct.

He said he liked what he had heard, it was the sort of thing he was looking for which was melodic instrumental guitar based music. He asked Steve if he had enough tunes for an album and Steve said yes, which was not quite the truth although he suspects that Miles knew that all along. In fact Steve had just the one tune and hoped he could come up with the rest.

He had a week to write the rest of the album and always maintains that the pressure of having to come up with another nine or so tracks in such a short time, gave him the impetus to be very creative.
